Viburnum prunifolium - Blackhaw Viburnum

Price

$69.99

Blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium) is a highly underutilized tree in landscaping.  Its small size - roughly 10-15 feet high and wide at maturity - makes it a suitable tree for even the smallest gardens. While not "flashy" per se, its ornamental attributes make this tree respectably well rounded: white flowers in late spring, brilliant red-purple fall color, and a natural, "woodsy" shape that doesn't require pruning. This Pennsylvania native also has high ecological value, notably the black haws (fruit) it produces in fall which birds love, but also functioning as a host plant for the larvae of nearly 100 species of pollinators.

What's also great about this tree is its adaptability. In natural spaces, it can be found growing along woodland edges, so a sunny or partly sunny spot among the company of other trees is an ideal spot in the home or commercial landscape. That said, due to it's adaptability, Blackhaw viburnum can also grow on exposed sites that receive sun all day and the brunt of windy conditions. It will also grow in most soil types, even clay, as long as it's well drained. It thrives with average to below average soil moisture and will even tolerate mild droughts (once established).

Another native viburnum, the Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago), is similar to Blackhaw viburnum in most respects. It too makes a terrific addition to most gardens and landscapes.

If deer are a problem for you, we recommend you provide your tree with protection, such as a metal cage, until the tree is large enough to not be severely damaged.
